Gardening For Mental Health: Why Do You Quit Gardening Each Fall?

This video asks a simple question: why do you quit gardening each fall? Gardening for mental health has been a revelation in my life, yet each year, so many gardeners throw in the towel come autumn. Quitting gardening during the dreariest time of the year has consequences.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is real, and it has affected my life in a big way. My struggle with SAD is the main reason why I moved from the Northeast to North Carolina in 2017. The long, mostly cloudy winters of the Northeast were negatively impacting my life, and I had to make a change. While the milder and sunnier southern climate was helpful, the real cure to my condition was gardening.

While I have been a gardener for much of my life, I treated winter as the “off season” when I lived in the Northeast. Since moving, I transformed gardening from a seasonal hobby to a year-round lifestyle. This has been the greatest antidepressant and therapy I could have ever imagined, and gardening year round has been a cure to my seasonal depression.

Because year round vegetable gardening has been so important to me, I encourage all gardeners to view gardening as a 365-day-a-year activity. Even if you cannot actively garden outside in very cold zones, the fall and winter is the time of the year you plan, research plant varieties, purchase fruit trees, order seeds, prep your beds…the list is long, and I provide a full list of all my year round gardening activities in this video. Simply planning, researching, and ordering plants and seeds will warm your heart and soul during a cold, dreary time.
