At about 1,000 m over water level the climate is constantly cooler than Sydney and the coastline, so it sustains numerous old-world cool environment plants. There are seasonal display screens of cherry bloom, tulips and autumn colour.
The garden was created by Paul Sorenson in the 1930s and it’s the best-known of the hundreds he created.
It was constructed as a weekend hideaway for Belgian business owner Henri Van de Velde.
There are several wonderfully crafted rock walls, stunning sights, and intriguing mature trees.
There is a natural gutter on the website with a waterfall streaming into a pool that was produced by damming the waterway with a big 40-tonne rock that resembles it’s constantly existed.
There is an alpine location, some charming strolling paths, a reflection pool and a naturalistic area with maples alongside a meandering stream that Sorensen developed after being influenced by Japanese garden designs.
