I solarize my soil so that I have less pest problems, less weeds and an overall more productive garden. There are pros and cons to soil solarization. In my opinion the pros far outweigh the cons. Soil solarization is an environmentally friendly method of controlling insects, weeds, and bacteria. The heat generated from soil solarization can also kill beneficial insects and organisms. The earthworms will simply relocate to a cooler area of the soil while solarization is in process. When the solarization process is complete beneficial insects and good microorganisms will quickly recolonize after adding organic material and organic fertilizers to the garden bed.

To solarize your garden soil. Remove all vegetation and mulch, thoroughly soak and securely place cleat plastic over the top for a minimum of 8 weeks. This will significantly reduce all weeds and pest for your following grow season. Compost with organic matter and organic Fertilize a few weeks before planting and watch the soil come to life.
